Microbiological fouling can cause many problems and should be well treated accordingly. Unwanted microbes within system can reduce and even prevent the effectiveness of corrosion and scale treatment regimes, costing money in wasted chemicals and leading to scale and corrosion and other related problems. Further problems caused by unwanted microbes are that they break down the nitrites, phosphates and some other components within the corrosion inhibitor formulation, This can deplete the corrosion inhibitor components present thus allowing corrosion to occur.

The growth of microorganisms and the development of biofilm can also greatly deplete heat transfer efficiency. For example a 1mm layer of biofilm will impair heat transfer efficiency by the same amount as a 4 – 5mm layer of calcium carbonate scale. Biofilm can also lead to a number of other problems such as blockages of valves and pipework, under deposit corrosion and protection of bacteria present in the biofilm from any biocides in the system.
